8th Sharjah Biennial and News from the Islamic Art World

News out of the Sharjah Biennial has seemed a bit hard to come by, but given we have two artists participating in the 8th rendition of the Arab World's premier contemporary art exhibition, I've been scouring the Internet for what's been said where. French and German language media have given better coverage than English ones (go figure), but I did get emailed a summary (with lots of photos) by the one resource for art in and about the Islamic world that, despite its truly comprehensive coverage, seems to remain a bit of a well-kept secret to many in the West: Universes in Universe. [Full disclosure: I was once paid for a report published on UiU of an exhibition in Kyrgyzstan.]

But back to Sharjah, the best analysis of the biennial I've read so far was by Hammad Nasar on
Artworld Salon; here's a snippet:

Sharjah is an interesting example to examine the evolutionary path of the biennial phenomenon. Venice is perhaps the exemplar of the “biennial as prize distribution/artworld validation” — a fine-arts version of the Oscars, with a similar impact on box office. At the other end of the spectrum lies the “biennial as art infrastructure.” Sharjah, to my mind, is part of this group. (Others would include the Liverpool Biennial’s efforts to regenerate the city, and Brisbane’s using the Asia Pacific Triennial as a way to build an institution with a world-class collection in Asian art.) Most other biennials lie somewhere in between - initiated by governments seeking to meet their own diplomatic, branding or tourist aims (think Singapore) or by local artworld folks wanting one of their own (too many to mention). In that way, biennials are the new airlines: Every country thinks they need one, but very few have a distinctive enough offering to bring to the world.
Two other good articles covering the exhibition in English include these on Juliana's Site and the New Statesman. Anyone know of others?

Wow! Which 2 artists Ed?
Did they have to fit within certain parameters?
Were some types of images not permitted?

Gulnara and Muratbek. Their work is not of a nature that the Sharjah censors would consider forbidding.

I know the only thing most folks have heard about this exhibition was the unfortunate decision to censor some imagery, but the truth of the matter is, it's rather daring in other ways (e.g., heavy criticism of the world's oil consumption in the Middle East is not what one would expect).

Hi Ed—I should probably weigh in and mention that the opening of the Sharjah Biennial was also covered on Artforum.com's "Scene & Herd" http://www.artforum.com/diary/id=13052

Ed,
Glad you have two of your artists represented there. Biennials have become a vehicle of choice to show the artistic tendencies of countries now. Thanks for the information here... Good post

I am somewhat familiar with the Biennial from the organizational-side, specifically Shaika Hoor Al-Quasami (I think that's proper spelling). My work is collected by Shaika Hoor {through my gallery in Cologne, Brigitte Schenk) as part of the permanent collection at the Sharjah Museum. All I can say it that Shaika Hoor, the director of the Sharjah Biennial, is an amazing art-savy woman. I've been invited to attend the Sharjah Biennial in 2009 as a guest. Stay tuned! - Doug Henders

I should also add, that she is determined to bring Western contemporary fine arts the to the Emerites which is no small feat as a FMRP (Female Muslim Royal Princess).
