Switching Gears

OK, so that last post was a horrible experiment {{{{Blech, yuck pitooey, blech, horrible taste in my mouth}}}

Here's something much better. A most excellent photography blog by Jörg M. Colberg (an accomplished
photographer himself) can be found at Conscientious. Jörg apparently scours the internet for photography nonstop, because every time I visit his blog there are more links to great photography. A true treasure trove. Don't miss it.

How do you know Jörg M. Colberg isn't a Quaker... (joking)

The photographer Jörg posted today -- Sally Mann Julie Blackmon -- is absolutely breathtaking.

I still remember when the editors of Photography Magazine droned dejectedly back in the late 70's that "We realize photography isn't an art, it's a craft..."

Blows me away.

now that's what I call red meat, Bill

The irony of the conclusion one can draw from PhotogMag's earlier inferiority complex is that by the same standards we use to label photography "art" today, the work of many of the medium's pioneers was simply light years ahead.

Indeed, all many a photograph needs to be considered "art" today is often an identifyable point of irony. That's not to say there's not fantastic art being made, just that it demonstrates the inverse correlation between praise and standards.

but that's my pre-caffienated crankiness talking...
